A driveway gets used every day, so the right choice depends less on trends and more on your lot: how long the drive is, how the ground handles rain, and how finished you want the approach to look.
When Gravel Makes Sense
A gravel driveway is a practical fit for longer drives on acreage and for homes where a paved surface is more than the job calls for. Built well, it gives you a firm, clean drive, and on many lots it lets more rain soak in than pavement would.
Long drives take a lot of stone. It comes in by the dump-truck load, and our loaders spread it evenly from end to end.
When Pavers Make Sense
Pavers give a driveway a finished look, with plenty of color and pattern choices. They suit homes where the drive is part of the curb appeal and needs to tie into a front walk or entry. Paver driveways are built with Oldcastle and Tremron pavers over an excavated, compacted base made to carry the weight of vehicles.
How Each One Handles Rain
Summer storms drop a lot of water fast. A gravel drive is shaped so water runs off to the sides instead of collecting in ruts. A paver drive is pitched so rain moves away from the house. If water already stands or runs toward the house, that may need its own drainage fix before either surface goes in.
Questions to Ask Before You Decide
- How long is the drive, and how much of it needs a new surface?
- Is the goal a simple, sturdy drive, or a paved entry that matches the patio and walkways?
- Where does water go on the lot after a heavy rain?
- Does the drive need to connect to walkways, a patio or the front landscape?
The answers usually point clearly to one option, and sometimes to both: gravel for the long approach, pavers near the house.
Driveway questions
Can you extend an existing gravel driveway?
Yes. New drives, extensions and long approaches on acreage are all part of the gravel driveway work.
Will a gravel drive turn into ruts after storms?
A drive with enough stone, spread evenly and shaped so water runs off to the sides, is less likely to collect water in ruts.
